WHITTIER, CA – The University of La Verne volleyball team traveled to Whittier College to battle the Poets Wednesday night, falling 3-1.
Emma Yogan stood out for La Verne, finishing with a career-high .308 hitting percentage.
The Poets took the first set, 25-23.
Emma Yogan showed off her big swings on the outside in set one, pulling the Leopards ahead, 13-9. The senior from Washington found a home at La Verne after playing at Cal State East Bay and Pasadena City. Yogan finished with five kills and a dig.
La Verne took the second set, thanks in part to front-row kills from
Mariah Ray,
Abigail Montana, and Yogan, and service aces from
Tova Craig and
America Reynaga. The team finished the night with eight service aces, preventing the Poets from getting a good first pass. Montana, the starting middle, went to work, totaling three block assists, four kills and a .231 hitting percentage. Ray followed her lead with seven kills and a block assist. The Leopards pulled ahead 19-9 and didn't look back, finishing the set, 25-19.
The third and fourth set fell in Whittier's favor, 25-13 and 25-15, but not without a fight from senior outside hitter
Lauren Gott. The team captain had three back-to-back kills in the third set, and finished with twelve kills, three block assists, and thirteen digs.
The Leopards are back in action on September 26 at Occidental College at 4 p.m.
