LOS ANGELES — Zacky Coaston and
Lauren Gott finished with double-digit kills, and the University of La Verne volleyball team took down the Occidental College Tigers in four sets Saturday afternoon.
Coaston was efficient on offense, hitting .500 with 10 kills. She also led La Verne with five blocks. Gott finished with 11 kills, six digs, and a block.
The Leopards broke away midway through the first set. Leading 12-8, La Verne finished the frame on a 13-6 run highlighted by back-to-back kills from Alanna Jones. Jones finished with nine kills and two blocks.
The squads battled deep into the second set. With La Verne trailing 21-20, the Leopards responded with three straight kills from Gott, Emma Read, and Alyssa Snider to retake the advantage. A kill apiece from Gott and Read, along with two Oxy errors, put La Verne up two sets. Read and Snider totaled four and five kills, respectively.
The Leopards finished with seven aces led by Emma Yogan's three, with Allison Mason tallying two and America Reynaga and Jordyn McCoy each contributing one. Yogan ended with 12 digs and five kills.
Occidental pulled away late in the third, 25-23, but the Leopards ended with a dominant 25-15 fourth set.
McCoy had a big all-around game. She led the Leopards defensively with 16 digs and added 21 assists. Reynaga paced La Verne with 23 assists.
Mariah Ray tallied nine kills and two blocks. Morgan Watkins finished with 13 digs.
Season Impact
The Leopards move to 4-5 overall and 1-1 in SCIAC action. The Tigers drop to 5-6 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
Next Game
The Leopards play their SCIAC home opener on Tuesday, September 29, at 7 p.m. against Chapman University.
