Strong Second Half Not Enough on Homecoming

LA VERNE, CA — The University of La Verne football team had a strong second half but couldn't stop the Kingsmen's running game and fell 31-17 on homecoming.

Masen Uribe added the highlight of the night on the Leopards' opening possession of the second half. He broke two tackles and ran for a 58-yard house call to get the Leopards within one score of tying the game. Uribe got the Leopards on the board at the end of the second quarter when he pounced on a loosed ball in the end zone after it was knocked away from Brian Rudden to cap off a 13-play, 80-yard-drive.

Jimmy Rumsey finished with 84 receiving yards on six catches. He snagged a one-handed reception for 23 yards in the fourth quarter to get to the Kingsmen's 41-yard line. The play helped extend the Leopards' drive which set up Jayson Lopez for a 32-yard field goal. Rumsey has finished with at least 75 receiving yards in every game this season.

Rumsey ranks first in the SCIAC with 487 receiving yards and 97.4 receiving yards per game and ranks second with 29 total receptions and 5.8 receptions per game. Lopez has made five field goals this season and is 14-15 on PATs.

Linebacker Devin Martin recovered a fumble on Cal Lutheran's opening drive of the fourth quarter. Kingsmen quarterback Jaden Casey rushed through the middle of the La Verne defense for three yards but De Lante' Moore forced the ball loose and Martin jumped on it on the La Verne 40-yard line. Martin added seven solo tackles, 11 total tackles, and one sack.

Vicente Zepeda led La Verne with 12 total tackles. He leads the SCIAC with 49 total tackles. Moore totaled 10 total tackles. Marlin Brown recorded his first sack of the season.

Cal Lutheran rushed for 227 rushing yards led by Casey's 84 yards and one score.  CJ Zackery followed with  64 rushing yards. Gabe Landless had two rushing touchdowns with 51 rushing yards.

The Leopards drop to 0-5 and 0-3 in the SCIAC. Cal Lutheran moved to 1-4 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
