Leopards Drop Game to CMS

CLAREMONT, CA — The University of La Verne football team fell on the road to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 57-14 Saturday afternoon.

Arthur McCown rushed for a two-yard touchdown in the first quarter. The Servite graduate set up the score with a 31-yard run earlier in the series.

Quarterback Jordan Hernandez added a three-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. The Leopards got to the CMS territory when Hernandez connected with Makena Ramos-Kamaka on a 37-yard pitch and catch.

Vicente Zepeda finished with 11 tackles. The SCIAC leader in tackles extended his season total to 60. De Lante' Moore added nine tackles with one for a loss. He picked off a pass on the opening play of the second quarter.

Nathan Tagaloa posted a similar stat line, ending with nine tackles and causing one turnover. The junior prevented a score when he forced a fumble at the three-yard line that Josiah Finnell recovered.

Braeden Varney and Joshua Workizer each tallied five tackles. McCown rushed for 62 yards and Masen Uribe ran for 53.

The Stags got the scoring started when they returned a punt for a touchdown on the Leopards' opening drive. A fumble on La Verne's third possession set up CMS with a short field and their third score of the game.

The Leopards cut the deficit to seven after McCown's score with 4:53 left in the first quarter. But the Stags scored 33 unanswered points to put the game away before Hernadez responded with his score midway through the fourth.

Justin Edwards led the Stags with 126 rushing yards.

La Verne falls to 0-6 overall and 0-4 in the SCIAC.

The Leopards head back to Sixth Street for a showdown at Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday, October 26 at 7 p.m.
