CLAREMONT, CA — The University of La Verne football team scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns but fell on the road to the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens 51-14.
Jimmy Rumsey hauled in a 15-yard catch from
Brian Rudden to put the Leopards on the board six seconds into the final period. Rudden threw another touchdown pass on La Verne's final drive of the game to
Julian Martinez for a five-yard score. Martinez finished with four receptions for 25 yards.
Malcom Perry broke the century mark on the ground for the first time as a Leopard, rushing for 106 yards on 9.6 yards per carry. Perry set up La Verne's final score with a 30-yard scamper to get inside Pomona-Pitzer's red zone.
Elijah Duckworth and
Jordan Hernandez each ran for 42 yards.
La Verne finished with 188 yards on the ground.
De Lante' Moore led the Leopards with six tackles including three for losses.
Nathan Tagaloa and
Braeden Varney finished with four tackles apiece.
The Leopards couldn't slow the Sagehens' high-powered offense, as Pomona-Pitzer found the end zone on its first six possessions. La Verne held Pomona-Pitzer to 117 yards on the ground but gave up 324 through the air.
La Verne moves to 0-7 overall and 0-5 in the SCIAC. The Sagehens improve to 6-2 overall and 5-2 in conference play.
The Leopards return home next Saturday, November 2 for a 1 p.m. kickoff against the University of Redlands.
