Women's Soccer Wins Crucial Game at Redlands

REDLANDS, CA — The University of La Verne women's soccer team earned a crucial 3-1 win over the University of Redlands last night at Farquhar Field in a highly anticipated SCIAC matchup.

After a scoreless first half, the Leopards broke through in the 39th minute when Antonia Escobar scored, assisted by Serenity De la Torre, giving La Verne a 1-0 lead. De la Torre stole the ball from a Bulldogs defender and took a clean shot right outside the box that Bulldogs goalie Shannon Stewart saved. As the ball came loose off of Stewart, Escobar finished out the goal with a strong shot to the bottom right of the net.

The Leopards continued their momentum early in the second half as De la Torre netted a goal in the 54th minute. Junior midfielder Natalia Cruz passed the ball down the field to De la Torre as she broke free, finding an opening outside the box. The senior forward fired a shot to the bottom right of the goal, extending the lead to 2-0.

Redlands fought back in the 65th minute with a goal from Sabrina Semmere, cutting the deficit to 2-1. However, starting junior forward Megan Llopis sealed the victory for the Leopards with a header in the 69th minute assisted by Miranda McGarry, securing the 3-1 win.

La Verne displayed offensive dominance throughout the match, outshooting Redlands 19-9. Goalkeeper Abigail Macedo made six critical saves, contributing to the defensive effort that ensured the win. The victory improved La Verne's record to 6-7-4 as they continue to battle for a spot in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament.

Beginning this season, the top five teams in the SCIAC advance to the postseason. The Leopards are currently in sixth place with 11 points and two games remaining. La Verne will need to win its final two games for a chance to qualify for the tournament. Whittier and Chapman are currently tied for fourth place with 16 points.

Up next, La Verne will look to carry their momentum into their next matchup against the Occidental Tigers this Saturday, October 26. The Leopards and Tigers drew 0-0 in their matchup earlier this season.
