Football Drops Road Game to Redlands

REDLANDS, CA — The University of La Verne football team traveled to the University of Redlands looking to claim their first win of the season.

But the Leopards couldn't overcome six turnovers and were unable to slow the Bulldogs run game, falling 38-17 on the road.

Jimmy Rumsey finished with 89 receiving yards on eight catches. He hauled in a 36-yard reception from receiver Makena Ramos-Kamaka on a double pass in the first quarter to get to the Redland's 12-yard line. The play set up a Jason Lopez 26-yard field goal.

Rumsey ranks near the top of most receiving categories in the SCIAC. His 403 receiving yards, 5.8 receptions per game, and 100.8 receiving yards per game all rank second in the conference.

With under 30 seconds remaining in the half, Masen Uribe grabbed a nine-yard touchdown reception from Jordan Hernandez to cap off a 17-play drive to put the score at 14-10.

Ronald Ropke made the play of the game for the Leopards early in the third quarter. The sophomore from West Covina fielded a kickoff at the one-yard line and sprinted untouched up the middle of the field for a 99-yard return to the house for the Leopards' first kick return touchdown of the season. The score cut Redlands lead to 21-17 with 8:18 left in the quarter.

But the Leopards' offense couldn't find a rhythm on their final four drives to close the gap.

Linebacker Braeden Varney picked off a pass on Redlands' opening drive of the second quarter. Varney returned the interception 36 yards and was one broken tackle away from a pick-six. Varney added four tackles, 1.5 sacks, and a quarterback hurry.

Vicente Zepeda led La Verne with career-high 13 solo tackles with one for a loss. De Lante' Moore tallied nine tackles and one sack. Justin Mondini ended with six tackles. Nathan Tagaloa had half a sack.

The Leopards drop to 0-4 on the season and 0-2 in the SCIAC. Redlands moved to 1-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

La Verne comes home on Saturday, October 12 for homecoming. The Leopards kick off at 5 p.m. against Cal Lutheran.
