Gray Leads Leopards in 11-0 Rout Over Oberlin

LA VERNE, CA — The University of La Verne softball team took on Oberlin College during spring break, splitting the series and ending in a dominant game two five-inning victory.

Game One: Oberlin College 3, La Verne 2

The Yeowomen and Leopards battled through a scoreless first three innings until Oberlin broke the stalemate in the fourth with an RBI single to center field for the 1-0 lead. 

Trailing 2-0 entering the bottom of the sixth, Sydney Diaz reached first on a throwing error, allowing to score Angelina Alderete for the Leopards' first run of the game . Cassandra Zapata hit a single later in the inning to left field to tie the game. 

A throwing error by the Leopards in the seventh led to the difference-making score for the Yeowomen.

Game Two: La Verne 11, Oberlin 0

After just four hits in game one, the Leopards' bats woke up in game two as the Leopards rattled off 12 hits in a run-rule win. 

Graduate student Taylor Gray led the Leopards, going 3-3 from the plate with four RBIs, one run, and one stolen base. Designated Player Isabella Garcia went 2-3 in the win with a stolen base.

Angelina Alderete tied her season high with three stolen bases. She leads the SCIAC with 20 swiped bags. La Verne totaled seven stolen bases.

The Leopards scored early and often, rolling to a 6-0 lead after the first two innings. 

La Verne had four extra-base hits in the win, all produced by Gray and Mia Pintado. The duo each recorded one triple and one double. Pintado finished 3-3 with two RBIs and two runs.

Jada Coria earned her first win of the season, giving up only two hits and zero runs.

Ava Chacon, Zapata, and Alderete each added an RBI.

Season Impact 

La Verne improves to 7-14.

Next Game

Due to projected inclement weather, there has been an adjustment in the Leopards' schedule. La Verne will now travel to Cal Lutheran for a doubleheader on Friday, March 28, beginning at 3 p.m.
