Softball Run Rules John Carroll

LA VERNE, CA — The University of La Verne softball team hosted John Carroll University, splitting the doubleheader Tuesday afternoon.

Game One: La Verne 9, John Caroll 1 (5 Innings)

After an early 2-0 jump from the Leopards in the first inning, the Blue Streaks brought in their only run in the top of the second inning. La Verne scored six more runs in the fourth and added one in the bottom of the fifth inning for the run-rule win.

Isabella Garcia went a perfect 3-3 at the plate, driving in one RBI. Shortstop Erika Garcia hit 2-3, finishing with three RBIs, including a game-finishing hit to earn the win. 

Cassandra Zapata hit in a pair of runs as part of the Leopards' six-run fourth inning. Julia Miramontes was quick off the bases, swiping two bags.

Kirstin Sanchez pitched four innings to pick up a win, allowing just one run and four hits with two strikeouts.

Ashley Rodriguez added one RBI and one run.

Game Two: John Carroll 11, La Verne 7

In an early 3-2 deficit after the first inning, La Verne brought in four runs in the second inning and put itself in position to sweep the Blue Streaks. 

But John Caroll got hot, bringing in seven runs to defeat the Leopards in the last three innings to beat the Leopards.

Rodriguez and San Diego native Taylor Gray had highlight-worthy diving catches to save potential runs in the first two innings. Right fielder Angelina Alderete went 3-3 and drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game 3-3 in the second inning.

Miramontes cleared the bases with a double in the second to put La Verne up 6-3.

Season Impact

The Leopards move to 3-7.

Next Game

La Verne continues nonconference on Thursday, March 7, in a doubleheader against Carnegie Mellon University at 3 p.m.
