WHITTIER, CA — The No. 10 University of La Verne baseball team traveled to take on Whittier College to finish the series in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon.
The Leopards finished off the sweep against the Poets improving their record overall to 25-9-1 and conference record of 17-4. The Leopards are leading SCIAC play holding the first spot in the rankings.
Game One: La Verne 26, Whittier College 4
The Leopards overpowered the Poets in Saturday's opener, finishing with season-highs in runs, hits (22), and RBIs (22).
Junior
Logan Corthell homered to left field earning two RBIs in the second at-bat of the game for an early 2-0 lead for the Leopards. The Poets quickly responded, scoring four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-3 lead.
Malachi Francois hit a sacrifice fly to give the Leopards the tie, bringing in
Aiden Salcedo for the score. The Leopards dominated from there, bringing in three runs in the third, eight runs in the fourth inning, and an overwhelming 11 in the fifth.
First baseman
Noah Garcia went 3-6 and brought in four runs for the Leopards.
Logan Corthell went 2-4 also earning four hits in the Leopards win.
Logan Reese was all threes across the board as he went 3-3, added three RBIs, and crossed home plate three times.
Graduate student
Gerald Terry earned a win improving to 8-2 as he faced 20 batters in five innings, giving up only three hits.
Tyler Lokar came in for relief facing six batters and gave up no hits.
The Leopards took the win 26-4 in five innings.
Game Two: La Verne 12, Whittier College 5
After facing an early 1-0 deficit, the Leopards showed their patience at the plate and took advantage of free passes in the fourth inning. Despite only having one hit in the inning, the Leopards scored eight runs, benefitting from five walks, two hits by pitches, and one error.
In the fifth with the bases loaded,
Logan Corthell was hit by a pitch for the second time to plate another run.
Nolan Anguiano hit a single to right field to drive in the Leopards' final run.
Catcher
Nathan Perry went 2-4 with two RBIs. Mathew DesMarets pitched five innings and earned the win to improve to 3-1.
Next Game
The Leopards will move on to their final regular season series against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and will travel for the opening game of the series on Friday, May 3 at 3 p.m.
