Comeback Falls Short Against Poets

LA VERNE, CA – The University of La Verne women's soccer team hosted their conference rivals the Whittier College Poets in an action-packed late-game thriller. A Poet goal in the 79th minute proved to be the difference-maker in the 2-1 loss.

Despite the defense, the Leopards' defense shined in this match, keeping the Poets' attack off rhythm for much of the game. But the Poets managed to take advantage just over thirty minutes into the match when forward Avery Gonzalez headed the ball into the goal, just out of the reach of goalkeeper Abigail Macedo.

Macedo provided the highlight of the game for La Verne. In the 64th minute, the Leopards were called for a foul in the box, setting up a penalty shot attempt for Madeline Traylor. Macedo dove to the right and gathered the ball to end the threat.

Down 2-0 as the clock started winding down, the Leopards' offense came storming back. Just one minute after giving up a goal the Leopards responded with one of their own. Kyle Klein lofted a pass from midfield that dropped right in front of a charging Kyla Allen. Allen took an unbalanced shot from just outside the box and fired it to the far corner of the goal.

Unfortunately, the Leopards couldn't complete the comeback. The Leopards are still on the hunt to win a SCIAC game.

The Leopards moved to 3-4 overall and held their ground against an undefeated Poets team.
