Men's Basketball Falls in OT to Whittier

WHITTIER, CA — The University of La Verne Men's Basketball team battled fiercely but ultimately fell in a thrilling overtime game against Whittier College, 96-93, at Dave Jacobs Court. Despite a strong showing from multiple players, the Leopards could not secure the win in this SCIAC match-up.

Senior guard Dahmaj Warren led the charge with an electrifying performance, scoring a game-high 33 points while adding six rebounds and two steals. Paul Antonis contributed a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds, showcasing his presence on both ends of the floor. Senior Joshua Rook had a season-high 10 rebounds, anchoring the Leopards defensively and adding to their effort in the paint. Logen Howard also chipped in with 15 points and five steals, proving to be a key playmaker for the Leopards.

The game was tightly contested throughout, with both teams trading leads multiple times. La Verne led 41-38 at halftime and continued to match Whittier's intensity, forcing the game into overtime. However, clutch free-throw shooting by Whittier in the extra period, including a perfect 17-for-17 performance by Aamari Smith, sealed the victory for the Poets.

La Verne's offensive efforts were highlighted by 43.1% shooting from the field, including nine three-pointers. Despite their strong showing, turnovers and missed opportunities in overtime proved costly. Whittier capitalized on these mistakes, scoring 26 points off turnovers and dominating at the free-throw line, going 35-for-40 overall.

La Verne (5-7, 0-3 SCIAC) will look to rebound as they return to the court for their next game against Cal Lutheran Wednesday, Jan. 15, at 7pm in the Tents. The Leopards remain determined to turn their season around and build on the positives from this high-energy performance.
