Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Rachel Rubio

Alyssa Smith's 12th Double-Double Not Enough in Leopards' Narrow Loss to Caltech

LA VERNE, CA — The University of La Verne Women's Basketball team battled through a tightly contested SCIAC matchup against Caltech but ultimately fell 71-68 at the Sports Science and Athletic Pavilion.

The Leopards controlled the game for the majority of the afternoon, leading after each of the first two quarters. Senior Christen Ziska led the way offensively with a team-high 19 points, shooting an impressive 5-for-7 from beyond the arc. Marissa Howell added 16 points and three three-pointers, while Alyssa Smith recorded her 12th double-double of the season—and third in the past three games—with 13 points and a dominant 16 rebounds.

La Verne came out strong, jumping to a 16-10 first-quarter lead and extending it to 34-22 at halftime. The Leopards' defense held Caltech to just 33% shooting in the first half. However, Caltech found its rhythm in the second half, particularly in the fourth quarter, where they outscored La Verne 30-19. The Beavers capitalized on their chances at the free-throw line and converted key baskets in the final moments to edge past the Leopards.

In the final minute, La Verne trailed by just two points, 68-66, after a fastbreak layup from Howell. The Leopards had an opportunity to tie or take the lead, but a crucial Caltech defensive stand forced a turnover. A late free throw by the Beavers sealed the game, and a last-second three-point attempt by La Verne fell short as time expired.

The Leopards (7-16, 4-11 SCIAC) will look to bounce back in their next conference matchup on Saturday, February 22, as they will host their final regular-season game against Pomona-Pitzer at 2:00 PM. The matchup will also serve as Senior Day, where the Leopards will honor their graduating players who have dedicated so much of themselves over their time at the University.
