Leopards Show Grit, Antonis Nears 1,000 Points Despite Loss to Tigers

LOS ANGELES, CA — The University of La Verne Men's Basketball team battled Occidental College in a SCIAC conference matchup at Rush Gymnasium but fell short in a 95-64 loss.

The Leopards started strong, holding the lead early in the first half. Senior Cody Aquino and graduate student Paul Antonis each scored 15 points to pace La Verne's offense, while senior Logen Howard added 13 points and five rebounds. Joshua Rook led the team on the boards with seven rebounds while also contributing two steals.

Antonis, now in his fifth year with the program, is inching closer to a major career milestone. The veteran forward has been a key contributor for the Leopards throughout his collegiate career, and with his performance against Occidental, he now sits at 973 career points—just 27 points away from reaching 1,000. As a leader on and off the court, Antonis has been a staple of the La Verne lineup, bringing experience, consistency, and a strong presence in the frontcourt.

Despite La Verne's early momentum, Occidental responded with a dominant shooting performance, finishing the game at 59.7% from the field and 60% from beyond the arc. Nasir Luna led the Tigers with 34 points, shooting 7-for-8 from three-point range, while Micah Breaux recorded a near triple-double with 19 points, 10 rebounds, and nine assists.

The Leopards trailed 50-37 at halftime and struggled to regain control in the second half as Occidental's efficiency continued. La Verne was held to 30.7% shooting overall and 25.8% from deep, while the Tigers capitalized on second-chance opportunities and turnovers to extend their lead.

La Verne (6-14, 1-10 SCIAC) will look to regroup as they head back home to face the University of Redlands on Wednesday, February 12, at 7 PM in the Tents.
