Rodriguez Hits Two Homers in Leopards’ Doubleheader

LA VERNE, CA — Ashley Rodriguez hit two homeruns, collected five RBIs, and scored two runs as the University of La Verne softball team hosted the George Fox University Bruins for a Saturday doubleheader, falling in both games, 9-4 and 7-4.

Game One: George Fox 9, La Verne 4

Senior Kirsten Sanchez started for the Leopards while junior Jordyn Relethford was handed the ball for game one. La Verne's offense gave Sanchez a quick 4-0 lead to work with, but Relethford hit a three-run home run off her in the top of the fourth inning, making it a one-run ballgame.

The Bruins tied up the game and took the lead in the top of the fifth inning, scoring six runs on six hits.

La Verne was unable to score the rest of the game. Sanchez took the loss, evening up her record at 1-1 while Relethford recorded the win for George Fox.

Game Two: George Fox 7, La Verne 4

Junior Briana Vasquez started in the circle for the Leopards and freshman Nicole Ledendecker made her first career start for the Bruins in game two.

George Fox jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but Rodriguez wasted no time answering back, launching her first home run of the day to cut the deficit to 3-2 in the bottom of the first.

The Leopards tied the score in their half of the third inning when senior catcher Alyssa Campbell singled to right field, bringing in Rodriguez who was on base via a single. Bruin's junior pitcher Alison Heater relieved Ledendecker and was able to hold the Leopards to just one more run the rest of the game off Rodriguez's bat, her second homer of the day beyond the right field wall.

George Fox's sophomore left fielder Kylie Harris and freshman designated player Bethany Wilkes both hit solo shots off Vasquez, extended their lead 5-3. The Bruins struck for another two runs off four hits in the top of the sixth while La Verne left a total of nine runners on base, unable to capitalize and falling in game two 7-4.

Senior right fielder Angelina Alderete finished her day with two hits and two runs scored while Campbell ended her day with three RBI's.
