La Verne Drops Game 4 Thriller to McMurry, Will Face Pomona-Pitzer in Elimination Game

LA VERNE, CA — In a high-stakes showdown at Ben Hines Field, the University of La Verne baseball team came up just short in Game 4 of the NCAA Division III Regional Tournament, falling 5-4 to McMurry University. The loss sends McMurry straight to Championship Sunday, while the Leopards are pushed into a win-or-go-home elimination game against Pomona-Pitzer, set to begin shortly after the conclusion of the afternoon contest.

La Verne jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first thanks to a two-run double by Logan Reese, scoring Ryan Vosika and Nate Perry. But McMurry chipped away, taking advantage of a fielding error in the second to cut the deficit to 2-1, then capitalizing on a wild seventh inning to plate two more and take a 4-2 lead. The Leopards committed two costly errors in the game, and McMurry stole two bases as part of a persistent offensive attack.

Down but not out, La Verne rallied in the eighth. After Malachi Francois drew a walk and Vosika followed with one of his own, Jason Givens delivered a clutch two-out, two-run triple to right center to tie the game at 4-4. However, the momentum swung back in McMurry's favor in the top of the ninth. A leadoff triple from Blake Beach followed by a sacrifice fly from Xavier Escobar proved to be the difference.

The Leopards had one last chance in the bottom of the ninth but were retired in order by McMurry reliever Jay Enriquez, who earned the win after 1.1 innings of relief. Starter Ethan Wendel held La Verne to just two hits over the first 7.2 innings despite walking four.

Matthew DesMarets was strong for the Leopards on the mound, striking out 11 over seven innings while allowing just one earned run. Givens led the offense with two RBIs and a triple, while Reese added a two-run double.

La Verne (35-10) will now face SCIAC rival Pomona-Pitzer in an elimination game with their postseason hopes on the line. First pitch is scheduled for shortly after 3:30 PM at Ben Hines Field.
