Leopards Outlast Stags in 11-Inning Thriller to Advance to SCIAC Championship Round

LA VERNE, CA — In an instant classic at Ben Hines Field, the University of La Verne baseball team outlasted Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in a grueling 11-inning battle, earning an 11-10 victory in their second game of the SCIAC Tournament. The win propels the Leopards (33-8) into the SCIAC Championship game, scheduled for Saturday, May 10 at 2:30 p.m.

The Leopards and Stags traded punches all afternoon in a dramatic, back-and-forth showdown. After building an early 2-0 lead, La Verne found themselves trailing 5-2 following a five-run fifth inning by CMS. But the Leopards answered immediately with a five-run fifth of their own, sparked by a Logan Reese single up the middle, who then advanced to second on a fielding error by the center fielder and ultimately scored on the same play—effectively resulting in an inside-the-park home run due to the error and heads-up base running.

After both teams continued to exchange runs, CMS tied the game at 10-10 in the top of the ninth on a sacrifice fly. From there, the bullpens took over until La Verne delivered the final blow in the bottom of the 11th. With two on and one out, Logan Reese laced a walk-off single to center field, bringing home Nate Perry and setting off a celebration at home plate.

Perry had a standout game, finishing 3-for-5 with three RBIs, including a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the seventh and scoring as the game-winning run. Ryan Vosika added two hits and two RBIs, while Aidan Salcedo crossed the plate three times. The Leopards tallied 16 hits as a team and showed patience at the plate, drawing six walks.

The La Verne bullpen pieced together key outs across nine different pitchers. Gabriel Lucero (1-0) earned the win after tossing 2.2 scoreless innings to close the game.

The Leopards now look ahead to Saturday's championship, where they'll battle for the SCIAC Tournament title and an automatic bid to NCAA Regionals.
