LA VERNE, CA — The University of La Verne Leopards opened the season with a tough 2-0 loss against NCAA Division II opponent Cal State San Bernardino.
Katy Beck led the Leopards in the net, racking up nine saves to keep La Verne close.
The Coyotes took the early lead at the 17:52 mark with a goal from Raylene Alcaraz, assisted by Angela Morales. Beck made several crucial saves, stopping six shots in the first half, but the Leopards couldn't break through CSUSB's defense. Despite a few offensive attempts from La Verne, including a shot from Khalea Turingan, the Leopards went into halftime trailing 1-0.
La Verne continued to fight in the second half but struggled to find the back of the net. The Leopards had several shots on goal, including efforts from
Lex Sahagian and
Megan Llopis, but CSUSB's goalkeeper, Anai Olmedo, was solid with two saves in the second period. The Coyotes sealed the victory with a penalty kick goal from Angelyn Pena at the 71:00 mark, extending their lead to 2-0.
