LA VERNE, CA - The University of La Verne women's basketball team defeated the Caltech Beavers in a Wednesday night battle by a final score of 67-61.
Isabella Gray-Musolff paced the Leopards with 15 points on an efficient 6-for-10 shooting night, including a sharp three-for-five performance from beyond the arc. She also pulled down five rebounds and provided timely scoring bursts, especially in the fourth quarter. Alyssa Smith added 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds while impacting the defensive end with four steals, and Jasmine Prajitno contributed 12 points, knocking down a pair of threes and going five-for-seven at the line.
As a team, La Verne shot 40% from the field and dominated the boards 41-26. The bench also delivered a key lift, combining for 19 points led by Zaria Gomez, Niani Shields, and Maya Sanborn.
The Leopards opened the game on a sharp 7-0 run with scores from Smith, Prajitno, Gray-Musolff, and Samantha Miller. Caltech responded with a 14-4 stretch to grab the lead, but La Verne steadied themselves in the second quarter. A strong 11-2 surge sparked by defensive stops and paint touches sent the Leopards into halftime ahead.
The third quarter proved to be La Verne's defensive anchor. The Leopards held Caltech to just seven points, forcing repeated turnovers and controlling the glass to build a 10-point advantage entering the fourth. Although the Beavers mounted a push in the final period, La Verne consistently answered with interior scoring and clutch free throws to seal their first SCIAC win of the season.
Up next, the Leopards will return to The Tents to take on Chapman at 4 p.m on Saturday, January 24th.
