Leopards Fall to Panthers Despite Double-Double from Smith

LA VERNE, CA — Alyssa Smith recorded her seventh double-double of the season, but ot wasn't enough as the University of La Verne women's basketball team lost to the Chapman University Panthers on Saturday evening, 63-50.

Smith led the way with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Niani Shields also shined, scoring nine and tallying four offensive boards as she continues to come back from early-season aches. Kaylee Shimoda recorded seven points and five rebounds, while Isabella Gray-Musolff notched six points.

The first quarter saw the Panthers jump out early with four threes in the first five minutes to take a 14-7 lead. However, Shields and Smith helped the Leopards claw their way back to just a one-possession game at the break.

The second quarter was a more balanced period with each team trading buckets. La Verne jumped out to take the lead, but the Panthers went on a 9-4 run to take a 5-point lead at halftime.

In the third, defense set the tone for both teams as neither side recorded points until three minutes in. A 6-0 run by the Leopards brought them back in the game, trailing just 40-36 heading into the fourth.

Despite some key offensive moments, the Leopards couldn't keep up with the Panthers' attack, as they were outscored 23 to 14 in the fourth to close the game.

Up next, the Leopards will return to The Tents as they face off against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
