LA VERNE, CA — The University of La Verne football team (2-4, 0-4) celebrates homecoming Saturday with a 4 p.m. showdown against the Cal Lutheran Kingsmen (3-3, 2-2).
LAST TIME OUT
The University of La Verne Leopards fell to the Redlands Bulldogs on Saturday evening by a final score of 48-0. Ronald Ropke led the receiving corps with three catches for a team-high 78 yards, including a long reception of 43 yards. Noah Allen added 36 yards on one catch, while Jimmy Rumsey and Tyler McCown contributed four receptions each for 27 and 18 yards, respectively. Brooklyn Pasten led the defense with 12 total tackles, including 11 solo stops and a tackle for loss of six yards, marking his second consecutive game with double-digit tackles. Roger Price III followed with 11 solo tackles, while Jomar Brown and Devin Martin each recorded seven total tackles. Martin also made an impact in the backfield, recording two sacks for 15 yards lost and a quarterback hurry. Dylan Reiner added six tackles and a sack for eight yards, while Brown and Justin Mondini each contributed a pass breakup.
THE MATCHUP
The Kingsmen enter this game 3-3 overall and 2-2 in SCIAC play. Last week, Cal Lutheran came up a point short in their homecoming game against Pomona-Pitzer. As a team, they showcase a balanced offensive attack, recording 93 rushing yards and 227 passing yards per game, while boasting an 87% red zone scoring rate. On defense, they have been known to be gashed on the ground, as opponents are averaging well over triple digits. Despite the yardage discrepancy, the pass-to-rush touchdown allowed ratio is 10-2. Senior receiver Jimmy Rumsey is five touchdowns away from tying the program record, and will look to have a huge impact.
SERIES HISTORY
Since 2004, the Leopards are 5-18 against the Kingsmen, with the most recent matchup resulting in a 23-19 loss.
