LA VERNE, CA — The University of La Verne football team (2-5) will play Azusa Pacific (1-5) on Saturday at 6 P.M. The Leopards are coming off a five-game losing streak, but defeated the Cougars 30-3 earlier this season.
LAST TIME OUT
La Verne fell 33-14 to Cal Lutheran during their Homecoming game last Saturday after battling back from an early 16-0 deficit to trail by just two points at halftime. Senior quarterback Brian Rudden threw for 154 yards and a touchdown, connecting with Jimmy Rumsey for a 10-yard score, while Tyson Walter added a rushing touchdown. Lorenzo Bracamonte and Walter led the receiving corps with seven catches each, and Roger Price III paced the defense with 10 tackles. Despite a strong first-half comeback, the Leopards were unable to score in the second half as Cal Lutheran pulled away with two fourth-quarter touchdowns.
THE MATCHUP
APU enters the matchup coming off a 14-0 loss against Pomona-Pitzer, with their defense showing out all game. On the season, the Cougars are averaging 122 yards per game on the ground, and just 60 through the air. The defense is their stronger side, however opponents have found success running the ball. La Verne will rely on their dual-threat QB Jordan Hernandez, as well as senior back Tyler McCown, as they look to snap their skid and get back to winning ways.
SERIES HISTORY
This is just the third game between the two teams since 2010, with the most recent resulting in a season-opening win for the Leopards back in August.
