Softball Plays Home Opener Against Trinity

LA VERNE, CA — The University of La Verne softball team battled the Trinity University Tigers of San Antonio Texas on Saturday in their home opener, dropping both games 8-2 and 10-6.

Senior Allie Colenzo helped the Leopards score in game one in the seventh, with a single to left field, leading to a Tigers' error that allowed Kylee Knight to score. Later that inning, Brooke Petretti showed strength at the plate with a grounder to first, allowing Julia Miramontes to find home plate. Briana Vasquez got that start and then returned in relief, totaling 5.1 innings of work and striking out four. Jaidynn Alvarez tossed 1.2 innings.

In game two, the Leopards sprang into action, scoring in the first inning. Colenzo and Miramontes scored on a Tigers error, cutting the deficit to 3-2. Miramontes finished with two hits and an RBI in game two. Colenzo scored again in the third inning, after Janella Vega hit a double to center field. Kileah Lologo stepped up next and drove in Vega with a single through the right side. Vega finished the day with a hit and two RBIs.

Miramontes drove in Allison Gutierrez for the Leopards in the third for the Leopards' final run of the game.

Freshman pitcher Alyssa Tafolla pitched her first collegiate game and earned herself a strikeout.

La Verne will be back in action on Sunday, February 14, hosting the Stevens Institute of Technology Ducks at Campus West in a doubleheader with game times at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
