Softball Sweeps Ducks with Run-Rule and Walk-Off Wins

LA VERNE, CA — The University of La Verne run-ruled and walked off Stevens Institute of Technology to sweep the Ducks Saturday afternoon at Camps West.

Game One La Verne 9, Stevens 0 (5 Innings)

The Leopards jumped on the Ducks early, scoring eight runs in the bottom of the first off four walks, two hits, two hit-by-pitches, and one error. Freshman Allison Gutierrez highlighted the inning, driving in Kylee Knight and Brooke Petretti with a double to right field for her first collegiate RBIs. Janelle Vega capped the inning, singling in Julia Miramontes and Alexis Keifer.

Vega drove in Keifer in the third. Gutierrez finished a perfect 3-3 at the plate with a run.

Briana Vasquez picked up the win, going four innings in her start with two strikeouts.

Game Two La Verne 6, Stevens 5

La Verne ended the day with a bang. In the bottom of the seventh with one out and runners in scoring position, Aries Alonso hit a hard, bouncing shot to second base. The fielder threw home, but Knight slid under the tag to give the Leopards the win.

The Leopards trailed by one entering the bottom of the seventh, but quickly got the tying run into scoring position when Bryce Shroyer doubled to left center. Knight stepped up next and kept and plated Shroyer with a single to left, tying the game and setting up Alonso's game-winning RBI.

The Leopards took the opening 2-0 lead in the second inning off three-straight singles from Shroyer, Alonso, and Annica Luna.

La Verne held onto the lead until the fifth when defensive miscues allowed the Ducks to plate a pair of runs. Steves took their first lead of the series the following inning off a double from Riley Lawrence. The Ducks extended their lead to 5-2 off a La Verne error later in the inning.

In the bottom half of the sixth, first baseman Aleiah Kupihea singled in Knight to cut the difference to 5-3. Miramontes followed with a single to score Sofia Carillo.

Jaidynn Alvarez picked up her first win of the season in five and a third innings of work. Alyssa Tafolla finished the game and struck out three of the six batters she faced.

Next Series

The Leopards continue nonconference action when they host George Fox on Friday, February 20, in a doubleheader that begins at 2 p.m.
