Shroyer Hits Walks Off Against Bruins

LA VERNE, CA — The University of La Verne softball team came back from behind in a doubleheader against the George Fox Bruins, with a walk-off swing by Bryce Shroyer.

The Leos finished 1-1 on the day, with scores of 5-1 and 4-3.

The Leos held the Bruins to 3-3 through the top of the seventh of Friday's finale. Tensions rose as the Leos accumulated two outs quickly. Aleiah Kupihea swung and reached base with an infield single. Alexis Keifer followed her lead and singled through the left side putting Kupihea in scoring position. With Keifer on first a pinch runner, Angelina Ratzlaff on second, Shroyer stepped up to the plate. The junior catcher muscled a hit up the middle. Ratzlaff raced home and slid in safely to secure the win.

George Fox pulled ahead early in the game with a home run to right center. La Verne answered in the bottom of the second with a groundout RBI from Kylee Knight that scored Sofia Carillo. Neither team scored again until the fourth inning when the Bruins plated two runs, making it 3-1. Brooke Petretti answered the call in the bottom of the fourth, doubling up the middle, allowing Knight and Keifer to score.

Jiadynn Alvarez and Alyssa Tafolla pitched for the Leopards during game two. Tafolla finished with four strikeouts in three and a third innings of relief. She didn't allow a hit with just one hit to earn her first collegiate win.

The Bruins took a 4-0 lead in the fourth inning of Friday's opener and held on for the win. Keifer led the Leopards with one hit and an RBI. Keifer bunted in the bottom of the fifth, advancing Annica Luna to third, and sending Sofia Carillo to the plate. Briana Vasquez and Angelina Garcia both pitched for the Leopards. Garcia struck out four and sent down two.

The Leopards are back in action on February 27, at 3 p.m., against the Occidental Tigers at home.
