RENO, NV — The University of La Verne track and field team opened its indoor season with an impressive showing in the High Sierra, highlighted by a wave of personal bests and multiple moves up the program's indoor performance lists. Competing in an indoor facility for the first time for much of the roster, the Leopards returned home with 25 personal records—12 from the men and 13 from the women.
"I was really pleased with how we competed this weekend," said Head Coach
Kevin Reid. "For many of our athletes, this was their first indoor experience, and once we settled in, you could really see the confidence build as the meet went on. We started a little slow, but we finished strong, and that's what you want to see in an opening weekend."
The weekend was highlighted by
Journee Jones, who set a new school record in the 20-pound weight throw at 11.65m, surpassing the previous mark held by
Madison Xie. Xie also delivered a standout performance of her own, posting a personal best, 11.35m, in the event.
The women's 600 meters was a major highlight, producing multiple personal records and a school record.
Ryleigh LaRue led the way with a 1:41.18, setting a new ULV indoor school record. Kalliah Ramirez ran a personal best of 1:54.53 to rank No. 2 all-time, followed closely by
Chloe Chong (1:54.66, No. 3) and
Jaiden Kelly (1:56.25, No. 4).
On the men's side, senior
Alec Maxwell made a strong return after a three-year absence from the sport, clearing 4.00 meters in the pole vault to rank second all-time on the ULV Indoor Performance List. Sophomore
Diego Herrera recorded a personal best (1:25.90) in the 600 meters, moving into the No. 3 spot on the indoor list, while junior
Harrison Brown added a personal best (8.86) in the 60-meter hurdles, climbing to No. 4 all-time for ULV.
"Seeing that many PRs across the board tells us we're on the right track," Reid added. "The effort was there, the competitiveness was there, and now it's about building off this momentum."
The Leopards will take the upcoming weekend off before returning to action at the Pomona-Pitzer Salo-Crenna College Invitational on Saturday, February 21.
