LA VERNE, CA – The University of La Verne softball team defeated the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens 2-1 on Friday afternoon thanks to some excellent pitching and defense.
All three runs in the game scored in the first inning. After Pomona-Pitzer scratched across one in the top half, the Leos responded with two of their own. Allie Colenzo led off the inning with a single up the middle and promptly stole second. Kylee Knight then doubled down the right field line to drive in a run. After she advanced on a groundout by Allison Gutierrez, Aries Alonso powered a single between short and third, giving the Leos the lead.
Briana Vasquez dazzled once again in her ninth win of the season. The sophomore went seven full innings for her 12th complete game this year, and allowed one run on just four hits. Her defense had her back, committing no errors and helping the righty escape a jam in the 6th. When asked about the win, the Leo ace said, "I'm feeling great. It's awesome to take the first win of the series, and I know my team is super excited. This is just one step closer to the tournament."
With this victory, La Verne now moves into a tie for third with Pomona-Pitzer in the SCIAC standings, with each team sitting at 9-7 in conference play.
The Leopards will wrap up the massive weekend tomorrow with a doubleheader against the Sagehens in Claremont. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
