Alonso Hits Homer, Leopards Clinch Series vs Sagehens

CLAREMONT, CA — The University of La Verne softball team took game two of the doubleheader at Pomona-Pitzer to win the series, notching a critical victory for postseason positioning.

Postseason Race

The Leopards are now in a tie for third-place in the SCIAC with Pomona-Pitzer, but the Leopards now hold the tiebreaker over the Sagehens. Both teams have a 10-8 conference record.

Redlands clinched the regular season title and the tournament No. 1 seed over the weekend. Several teams are still in the mix for the final three playoff spots with three games remaining in the regular season. Chapman is in second place at 11-7. Whittier is in fifth place at 9-9, and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps is in sixth at 8-10.

Game Two: La Verne 9, Pomona-Pitzer 5

Aries Alonso hit a solo home run to get the scoring started in the second, and the Leopards rallied for five runs in the fifth to claim the series against Pomona-Pitzer.

With the Leopards trailing 2-0 in the second, Alonso got the Leopards going when she skied a shot over the right field fence for her first career homer. Annica Luna tied the game later in the inning with an RBI single to plate Brook Petretti.

La Verne surged ahead in the fourth, scoring five runs to take a 7-3 lead. Alison Gutierrez highlighted the inning with a two-run double that brought in Allie Colenzo and Angelina Ratzlaff. The Leopards got the scoring started thanks to a pair of Pomona-Pitzer miscues. Petretti scored on a wild pitch, and Sofia Carillo scored on an error. Kyle Knight added a sacrifice fly.

Gutierrez and Alonso ended their spectacular games with another RBI apiece in the sixth. Gutierrez hit a single through the left side to bring in Ratzlaff, and Alonso doubled in Colenzo.

Reigning SCIAC Pitcher of the Week Jaidyn Alvarez earned the win with a complete game effort. She struck out three to pick up her fifth win of the year.

Game One: Pomona-Pitzer 10, La Verne 2

The Leopards scored two in the fourth but couldn't slow the Sagehens in game one of the doubleheader.

Alison Gutierrez and Angelina Ratzlaff both knocked in RBIs.

Next Series

The Leopards close out the regular season this weekend against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. The Leopards open the series on Friday at CMS at 3 p.m., and return to Campus West for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
