ULV Softball Drops SCIAC Tournament Opener, Will Face Poets on Saturday

REDLANDS, CA — The University of La Verne softball team scored first but couldn't hold off the Chapman Panthers in game one of the SCIAC Tournament, falling 6-1.

The Leopards will now play an elimination game tomorrow at 11 a.m. against No. 4 seed Whittier College, who fell to No. 1 Redlands 15-4 in round one. All games of the tournament will be played at the University of Redlands.

The Leopards scored the first run of the game in the second inning when second baseman Janelle Vega singled to center. A bobbled ball by the Panthers' center fielder allowed Mikayla Galaviz to take an extra 60 feet and score the opening run.

Chapman broke the game open in the third inning, plating four runs in the inning off three hits and a La Verne error to take a three-run lead.

The Panthers added two more runs in the sixth off a two-out, two RBI double from Shea Higa to extend the Panthers' lead to five.

First Team All-SCIAC selection Briana Vasquez started in the circle, going 4.1 innings with two strikeouts while allowing just one earned run.

Allison Gutierrez and Annica Luna each added a hit.

Tournament Bracket
The winner of round one will go on to play the winner of the No. 1 Redlands vs. No. 4 Whittier, also held at Redlands on Friday at 3:30 p.m. From there, the brackets split into a winners and losers bracket of double elimination play.
