Leopards Close Indoor Season in Seattle and Welcome Outdoors in Claremont

SEATTLE, WA — The Leopards started the weekend at the University of Washington Ken Shannon Last Chance Qualifier with Tyler Thomas running the 60m (7.10) and 200m (22.32) and Joshua Collier (8.72) and Zach Reid (8.36)  running the 60m high hurdles.

"All three athletes competed well as they lined up against a predominantly NCAA DI field. No improvements were made in their qualification status for the NCAA DIII Indoor Championships but their consistency in their results bodes well for the outdoor season in the coming weeks," said La Verne track and field head coach Kevin Reid

Most of the Leopard track and field teams competed at the 28th CMS Rossi Relays, the traditional outdoor track & field kick-off in Southern California.

"The general theme of Leo Track & Field the past month has been to edit and re-write the La Verne top 10 lists," added Reid.

This weekend would be no different. Highlighting the newest entries on that historical list from this past weekend's efforts include AJ Reyes and Santiago Herrera in the men's 3000m. Reyes' time of 8:43.02 puts him number four all-time for the Leo's, with Herrera right behind him at number four at 8:51.77.  Not to be left out of the celebration, Gwen Maddox put her name on the women's 3000m list at number seven with her personal record run of 11:02.41

Most of the efforts on the track took place in relays, with the Leopards fielding both men's and women's teams in the 4x100m, 4x400m, 4x800,  sprint medley relay, and distance medley relay.

Leopards' alumnus and current La Verne throw's coach, Andrew Carrasco, had nothing but good things to say about his young throws group that debuted in the hammer, javelin, and discus events.

"I feel good about where we are moving into the outdoor season.  We have put up some quality marks, and we have been consistent with our performances. The big PRs will come with time.  We need to remember that it is still February, and we are looking to perform at our best in April and May," said Carrasco

Up next for the Leopards will be SCIAC No. 1, hosted by Occidental this Saturday, March 2.
