POMONA, CA — Jay Alvarado Wing led the University of La Verne men's golf team with a first-place individual finish at SCIAC No. 2.
Alvarado Wing carded a 2-under 138, to take the top spot. He finished day one just two strokes off the lead after shooting a 69. Consistency proved to be the difference, as he shot a 69 on day two, to win by just one stroke. Alvarado Wing was the only golfer to shoot under par both days.
"It's huge. I know he's putting a lot of time into this. I told him this is your event. He played well in qualifying rounds. We practice really well here. We're really happy about it," said La Verne men's golf head coach Nathalie da Silva on Alvarado Wing's performance.
The win marks Alvarado Wing's second individual first-place finish for the freshman. He won the Leopards Spring Invitational earlier this season.
Jason Bustos finished in the top 20 with a 148. Patrick Lagura and Shreyas Kumaresh finished one spot behind with a 149. Manuel Huerta carded a 150.
The Leopards took sixth as a team with a score of 583. La Verne remained in contention for the top spot after day one, combining for a score of 283, but a 300 team score on day two pushed La Verne down the standings.
"We played really well the first round, second round not so much. We dropped a lot of easy shots out there. We're gonna practice and grind. We have three weeks to get back at it so we will," said da Silva.
Next Round
The Leopards compete next at the SCIAC Championships from April 28-30 hosted at Los Serranos Golf Club in Chino Hills.
