LA VERNE, CA — Three Leopards have been named SCIAC Athletes of the Week, the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced Monday.
Jomar Brown was named SCIAC Football Defensive Athlete of the Week after a massive game in the Leopards' 26-8 road win at Pomona-Pitzer. The junior cornerback picked off the Sagehens twice in the win and finished with four tackles. His first pick set up La Verne's opening field goal. He snagged another ball in the final seconds of the first half to preserve a 19-0 lead at the break. La Verne football is back at home this Saturday at 1 p.m. against Redlands.
Mya Ray earned SCIAC Volleyball Offensive Athlete of the Week for the fourth time this season after another monster week in three wins for the No. 1 Leopards. She posted 18 kills in wins over Whittier and Pomona-Pitzer and finished with 20 kills over No. 19 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. She finished the week with 56 kills, three aces, 32 digs, and seven blocks. The undefeated Leopards return to action at Cal Lutheran on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Hector Duenas-Pena picked up his third SCIAC Defensive Athlete of the Week honors after two stellar performances inside the pipes to help the La Verne men's soccer team earn two crucial points. He posted a shutout with six saves in a 0-0 draw at Cal Lutheran. He ended the week with eight saves in a 1-1 match against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. The keeper has 73 saves and six shutouts this season. La Verne men's soccer is currently in a tie for third place in the SCIAC. The Leopards look to clinch a spot in the SCIAC Tournament this Saturday when they play their final regular-season game and host Senior Night against Whittier at 7 p.m.
