CLAREMONT, CA — The University of La Verne track and field teams opened the 2025 outdoor season at the Crenna Invitational hosted by Pomona-Pitzer.
"We had some solid performances, highlighted by no less than 24 personal best efforts and several heat-winning performances," said University of La Verne Track and Field Head Coach
Kevin Reid.
Peyton Carrera posted a top-10 finish and a personal best in the 800m with a time of 2:26.11. Freshman
Gennessy Ortega led the women's squad in the jumps in her first meet as a Leopard. The newcomer set a distance of 5.00m (16-05.00) to take sixth in the long jump.
Madison Xie took fifth in the shot put with a throw of 27.16m (89-01).
Emily Hernandez added 10th-place finishes in the hammer throw(29.11m, 95-06) and the javelin (29.04m, 95-03).
Four Leopards earned their way into the top 10 in the men's 800m run. La Verne took fifth-eight with
Isaac Stockton (1:57.66),
Zyeir Lasley-Shabete (1:57.84),
Diego Herrera (1:59.72), and
Fernando Cortez (1:59.91) posting fast times.
Freshman
Harrison Brown showcased his speed in the 110m hurdles, taking second, clocking in at 15.92. He followed it up with a third-place finish in the 400m hurdles at 1:00.31.
Terrell James added to the talented freshmen performances, taking third in the discus with a throw of 39.89m (130-10).
La Verne posted two top-10 finishes in the 400m dash led by freshman
David Ramirez's fifth-place effort (52.97) and junior
Nicolas Saenz eighth-place performance (53.59). Freshman
Emmanuel Akapo Nwagbo took 10th in the 100m dash with a time of 11.71.
The Leopards will be back in action next week. On Saturday, February 22, the distance runners will return to Claremont for the annual CMS Rossi Relays.
