LA VERNE, CA — The University of La Verne football team (2-0) will travel south to Orange, CA to take on the Chapman Panthers (1-1) on Saturday at 7 P.M. The Leopards are riding the momentum of their first 2-0 start since 1999 after a win against the Willamette Bearcats.
LAST TIME OUT
La Verne picked up a big-time win against the Bearcats on the road last Saturday by a final score of 45-16, controlling both sides of the ball. On offense, Tyler McCown continued his solid start to his senior campaign, rushing 31 times for 230 yards and two touchdowns. Jordan Hernandez threw for a career-high three touchdowns, which were hauled in by Jaden Beals, Jimmy Rumsey and Kasey Gillis.
Defensively, Brooklyn Pasten had nine total tackles and two pass breakups, while Chase Yanez recorded seven takedowns. Dalton Tagaloa also recorded five tackles, with four of them being solo wrap-ups.
THE MATCHUP
The Panthers enter the matchup coming off a victory over nationally ranked No. 19 Linfield. La Verne will once again face a pass-first offense, as Chapman is averaging 251 passing yards per game. However, the Leopard pass defense has been up to the challenge early in the season. Through the first two games, La Verne has held opponents to an average of just 124 passing yards per game, ranking 21st in Division III. Overall, the Leopards have been one of the nation's top defensive units, ranking 12th in Division III while allowing just 194 total yards per game.
On the flip side, ULV's 236 yards per game on the ground puts them in the top 25 of all D3 teams, and Tyler McCown will once again look to lead the leap. Senior QB Jordan Hernandez has also developed into a dual-threat option, adding another level to La Verne's offensive attack.
SERIES HISTORY
Overall, the Leopards are 4-20 against Chapman and look to snap a 12-game losing streak against the Panthers.
