Handel, McGarry, and Macedo Named All-SCIAC

LA VERNE, CA — Three members of the University of La Verne women's soccer team have earned All-SCIAC honors the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced Tuesday.

Maren Handel, Abigail Macedo, and Miranda McGarry all earned Second Team All-SCIAC recognition.

Handel earned second-team accolades in back-to-back seasons. The sophomore from La Habra led the Leopards' backline starting, all 19 of La Verne's games while racking up the second-most minutes on the team. She helped the Leopards post seven clean sheets.

"Maren continues as a sophomore to lead our backline. Her one-vs-one defending, tackling, and ability to distribute have been the reason for much of our success this year. We are very excited for her leadership to continue to push this team forward next year," said University of La Verne women's soccer head coach Lauryn Pehanich.

Goalkeeper Abigail Macedo earned a spot on the All-SCIAC team to cap her Leopard career. Macedo recorded seven shutouts, the second most in the SCIAC, and was on the field for every second the Leopards played this season. Macedo finished the year with 69 saves and totaled 186 career saves.

"Abi has been a staple for us in the net the past two years. Her timing on her one-vs-ones kept us in matches, her distribution started many of our attacks, and her leadership led us through games. She was very consistent this year and she will be difficult to replace," added Pehanich.

Miranda McGarry ends her time at La Verne with her first All-SCIAC selection. The defender from Chino Hills started in every game and anchored La Verne's stalwart defense. She posted two assists and ended her career with a game-winning goal against Caltech in the final game of the season.

"Miranda in her four years at La Verne has been equally effective in the defensive and the offensive side of the game. Her speed and one-vs-one defending made her very difficult to beat in the final third. And her ability to strike the ball with her right and left foot made her attacks unpredictable. She will be missed on both sides of the field," said Pehanich.
