Like most people, University of La Verne golfer Taylor Ward was looking for a hobby while the COVID-19 pandemic spread throughout the world in 2020. While not many spots were open, golf courses were. Taylor's dad, James took her to their local course and the rest is history.
Ward became a member of Bonita High School's Varsity Golf team in her first official year playing as a junior and decided to attend La Verne to stay close to home and continue her golf career.Â
Ward, a third-year double majoring in political science and history, has her hands full. Besides being a student-athlete, Ward is the Vice President of Phi Alpha Theta, a national history honor society; a member of the ULV chapter of Alpha Chi, a national honor society composed of students ranked in the top 10% academically at the university; and the President of United Model Nations, an organization that attends conferences where the members represent a foreign country and act through simulations of diplomacy to educate members about the role the United Nations play in international affairs
"It may sound weird to go and role play as a country for an entire weekend, but it is such a fun experience," Ward said. "We are able to work on different skills and build connections."
While her responsibilities seem overbearing, Ward can balance her academics, extracurriculars and sport because she holds a genuine love for these organizations and has fun while learning, performing and playing.Â
"I still have to work incredibly hard," Ward said. "The fun times make the hard times not as bad."
Ward is looking forward to traveling to Salem, Oregon with her team this March for the Willamette University Invitational. Her favorite part of golf is being on the course with her friends or dad. Her passion comes from her love of the game and her constant drive to improve.
