LA VERNE, CA– The Leopards stay undefeated as they finished their first weekend of SCIAC play. The No. 1 University of La Verne volleyball team took on Pomona Pitzer at home on Saturday and walked away with a 3-1 victory. The Sagehens put up a fight, stealing a set from the Leopards, but they were no match for the Leos in the end.
Mya Ray and
Lauren Gott had a fantastic night, with a combined 35 kills between them. Ray led the Leopards with 25 while Gott put down 10.
Zacky Coaston led La Verne with seven blocks. Coaston is tied for first in the SCIAC with 51 total blocks and entered the weekend ranked ninth nationally with 1.29 blocks per set.
The night started out hot with the first set; the score remained tight but the Leos broke a 20-20 tie and clinched a 25-21 victory. In the second set, the Leopards pulled away, and kept the Sagehens at bay with a late 5-2 run to win, 25-16, off .423 hitting.
The third set proved to be more difficult for the Leopards as the Sagehens reared back and stole the frame, 26-24. The Leopards executed in the fourth, hit .316, and claimed a 25-20 win to stay perfect.
Mariah Ray made a game-changing contribution, with six kills and five blocks.
Malia Capistrano led the setters in assists, with 21, followed closely by
Vanessa Marquez with 19.
Keilani Mumolo also had her fair share of assists; the libero finished with six to her name.
Season Impact
The No. 1 Leopards improve to 11-0 overall and 2-0 in the SCIAC.
Next Game
The Leopards are back in action on Tuesday, September 30th for a top-20 matchup at No. 17 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 7 p.m.
