Finn McClure, 1500m school record

McClure Sets School Record at Leo Invite

LA VERNE, CA — Finn McClure broke a 15-year-old school record to highlight the University of La Verne track and field team's performance at the Second Annual Leopard Invitational.

McClure ran a new program-best time of 3:52.59 in the 1500m on day two of the meet. The Previous best time of 3:53.03 was set in 2010 by Adam Heredia. McClure hung in a heat filled with NCAA Division I runners to post his lifetime best performance.

"It was a lot of fun. There were a lot of great guys in the race, and I just hung on. Tonight was the night, and I just went with it and trusted it," said McClure. "If you believe it, you can achieve it."

McClure came into the race with a previous personal best time of 3:53.44.

Isaac Stockton added a big personal best while winning his heat of the 800m. Stockton finished with a time of 1:54.96, shaving nearly three seconds off his previous best, 1:57.58.

Peyton Carrera won her heat and was the fastest DIII runner in the 800m. Carrera finished with a new personal best time of 2:17.83, a near two-second improvement and the third fastest time in La Verne history.

Zachary Reid ran a season-best time of 14.61 in the 110m hurdles. Reid entered the race with a SCIAC-best time of 14.67. Later in the weekend, Reid improved his time by posting a 14.52 at the Mt. SAC Relays.

Gennessy Ortega added a PR in the long jump, finished second overall, and first among DIII Competitors. She set a new best mark of 5.38m (17' 8"). 

Emily Hernandez took fourth in the javelin 29.10m (95' 5"). Michael Benschop PR'd in the javelin, 40.13m (131' 8"), and took sixth. Emmanuel Nwagbo ran a new best in the 400m and was the second fastest DIII runner, 53.56.

Terrell James was the top DIII finisher in the discus, 38.85m (127' 5").

School Bragging Rights

Athletes from the La Verne football, men's soccer, women's soccer, swim and dive teams, along with a men's track and field alumni squad, ran in a special ULV All-Sport 4x100m race. The La Verne football team won the race to claim bragging rights until next season.  

Next Meet

The Leopards compete next at the SCIAC Championships from Saturday, April 26, through Sunday, April 27, at Occidental College.
